My works are inspired by traditional asian ceramic forms overlaid with continual mark-making, using techniques such as sgraffito, slip decoration and under-glazing to overlay drawings onto the form, these drawings are an exploration of the surface pattern from which I develop as part of a series. Working on the potter's wheel is a traditional technique I have always been drawn to, with the notion of the craft as a form of frozen poetry, aiming to transcend this sentiment through every work I make. The process of etching each design laboriously onto the surface allows me to maintain the integrity of manual craft with an aesthetic which echoes this.

The beginnings of new work are shaped with initial draftings to attain the form of the vessel, drawing is a crucial element in my practice with the ceramic acting as a canvas. Motion and expression are created through a repetitive pattern, with each mark holding as much significance as the last. I view drawing as a visual language, creating gestural spaces which balance uniformity with disorder.

Over the years my practice has been influenced by artists who work across the fields of ceramic, painting and drawing, The surface decoration of Rupert Spira’s work has been extremely influential, his unmistakable ability to use drawing as a visual language married with the graceful form of the vessel continuously energises my need to push my practice. The distinctively ethereal porcelain forms of Taizo Kuroda’s work similarly engages my need to find an organic beauty within my throwing. Looking at the history of ceramics in a wider sense from primitive vessels through to contemporary practices which incorporate various mediums and techniques is an important line of research which runs alongside my studio practice and continues to inform my critical thinking in respect to the work I produce.
